Why I Volunteer: Malika

Name: Malika

Volunteer program: Medical Advocacy

How long have you volunteered for BARCC? Seven months

What do you do when you're not volunteering? I work in genetics research full-time. I love to bake, spend time outside running or hiking, and read (I am a book club fanatic).

Why do you volunteer with BARCC? When I moved back to the Boston area, I wanted a way to get involved in my community, and I have always been passionate about advocacy and empowerment. The values upheld by BARCC resonated so strongly with me, especially that of empowering the survivor to make informed choices and supporting them no matter what. I knew I wanted to be part of an organization that was built on education, empowerment, and respect. I am constantly learning from and growing with the BARCC community.

What's your favorite part of supporting survivors? I volunteer for the medical advocacy program, which often means that I see survivors during periods of chaos while a lot of information is being thrown their way. I like knowing that in a tumultuous time, I get to focus solely on the survivor and be there for them no matter what. Some of my favorite moments are when I get to reassure survivors that they are in the driver's seat—giving them control and helping them make the choices that are best for them is the greatest feeling.

If you could time travel, where/when would you go? I would go to Ancient Egypt. They were very into music, art, good food, and cats—the perfect place for me!

Are you interested in volunteering for BARCC? We have a variety of opportunities—check them out and apply for an upcoming training today!
