From TikTok to Teen Job Fairs to Tarana Burke

BARCC’s Youth Leadership Corps (YLC) in Action.

Since last fall, this year’s cohort of the BARCC’s Youth Leadership Corps (YLC) has been hard at work developing and exercising their skills for making change and educating their communities.

One of their projects has been a big hit on BARCC’s social media: a collection of TikTok videos on healthy relationships, the Healthy Youth Act, rape culture, and male survivors. Check out their TikToks below, then read on for more of what they’ve accomplished and continue to work on!

Achievements of this past academic year

  • Participated in over 30 hours of sexual violence prevention training.
  • Attended the Tarana Burke award ceremony at the Harvard Kennedy School and asked Tarana herself about how the Me Too organization is expanding worldwide.
  • Attended and tabled at a community teen job fair at the Roxbury Boys & Girls Club, where they interacted with other youth, shared the work of the YLC and provided information about BARCC resources.
  • Ran a school-wide survey at Brookline High School about sexual violence and how administration handles students who come forward.
  • Gathered data through one-on-one interviews on how their friends and classmates are talking and learning about sexual violence prevention and health relationships.

Ongoing projects

  • Several members will be attending a medical advocacy peer supervision meeting to discuss the importance of youth leadership and voice within sexual violence prevention work.
  • Developing a song to highlight all of BARCC's resources.
  • Developing a lesson plan on the basics of consent using media literacy as a means to discuss how consent is discussed in popular culture.
Our mission is to end sexual violence. We empower survivors of sexual violence to heal and provide education and advocacy for social change to prevent sexual violence.
