At BARCC, we know that there is power in speaking out. We stand in solidarity with all survivors and those who publicly stand up against perpetrators. If you are a survivor of sexual assault or harassment, news stories might catch you off guard. You may feel you’re coping well, when a small detail from a news story suddenly reminds you of your own experience.
“This reaction is normal,” says Sharon Imperato, LMHC and project director of clinical training and technical assistance. “It may come with emotions that need attention, and a reminder to approach yourself with compassion.”
We hope these tips can help you cope when the news cycle feels heavy.
- Focus on how far you’ve come. Remind yourself that you are a survivor and a thriver!
- Give yourself permission to look away. Minimize exposure by setting a limited time to check in each day. To avoid tossing and turning at night, skip checking the news before bedtime.
- Connect with others. Whether or not you choose to discuss your own sexual violence experience, make an effort to spend times with friends and loved ones.
- Reach into your toolbox. Tap into strategies you’ve used before to stay balanced, or make a list of the things that restore you. Check out the video series here to try engaging your five senses, focusing on breathing, and more.
- Get help when you need it. BARCC is a great resource for you and your loved ones during challenging times. Call our 24/7 hotline at 800-841-8371 or send us a message at barcc.org/chat.
