We have noted a few times in recent weeks that BARCC’s hotline volunteers are experiencing an increase in calls and messages since the U.S. presidential election, and this remains true during inauguration week. Survivors are reaching out feeling anxious about what the next four years might bring.
This week, we also celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King. While we acknowledge the challenges ahead, we also want to focus on the persevering spirit exemplified by Dr. King and his embrace of nonviolence.
When we reflect on Dr. King’s incredible impact, we’re reminded of his unwavering commitment to justice, even in the face of powerful opposition. Dr. King’s dedication to nonviolence and equality, no matter the challenges, continues to inspire movements for social change — including the work we do every day here at BARCC.
Dr. King advocated for change through courage, compassion, and an unshakeable belief in the power of community. His “Keep Moving From This Mountain” speech, delivered at Spelman College in 1960 resonates with us today.
At BARCC, we know that pushing for systemic change isn’t always easy — especially when the political climate feels unsupportive or even hostile. But Dr. King’s example reminds us that meaningful progress is possible when we stay true to our mission, even in challenging times.
As we move forward, let’s honor Dr. King’s legacy by continuing to stand with survivors, educate our communities, and fight for policies that build a safer, more equitable world. Together, we can create the change we want to see.
Let’s keep moving.
