Every year on March 8, International Women’s Day serves as a global call to celebrate the achievements of women and recognize ongoing struggles for gender equality.
Since our beginning, BARCC services have been available to all survivors, as sexual violence affects people of all genders, ages, races and sexual orientations.
Historically, women have been disproportionately impacted by sexual violence. International Women’s Day is an opportunity to discuss the connection between gender inequality and violence against women and to take action to advance equity, inclusivity and a culture free of violence. Sexual violence, and specifically sexual violence against women, has too frequently been ingrained in our systems and institutions.
The movement to advance gender equality is as important today as when International Women’s Day was founded, with a political environment that’s frequently hostile to women and people in the LGBTQ+ community. Education and advocacy are key to impacting change, and we all can participate. At BARCC, we know that education about inclusivity, equity, consent, boundaries and healthy relationships work to prevent sexual violence.
Actions You Can Take for International Women’s Day
- Educate yourself and others about the realities of sexual violence and its impact on women.
- Have a conversation with a family member or friend – including children and teens – about equality and inclusivity.
- Advocate for policies that strengthen protection for survivors and promote gender justice.
- Support survivor-centered organizations like BARCC by donating, volunteering or amplifying their work.
If you or someone you know needs support, BARCC is here for you. Our free, confidential services are available to all survivors, regardless of gender identity. Visit barcc.org for more information.
