Over 180 walkers from around Boston came to walk in the rain and wind at DCR’s Constitution Beach in East Boston. Survivors, supporters, families, and friends of BARCC gathered ahead of the three-mile journey to hear welcoming remarks from Interim Executive Director Duane de Four.
“No matter what the weather, no matter what’s happening in the world, no matter how difficult or cold it may seem, we always have a strong group of people who show up for survivors. We are here for survivors.”
de Four shared a note from Representative Ayanna Pressley, who was unable to attend. “At this event, year after year, survivors and allies draw strength from each other. And that strength allows us to help our fellow survivors walk towards self-love, and to affirm that the time for change is now,” wrote Pressley. “I invite you to walk from darkness towards light, walk from isolation towards community, and together we walk on the pathway to peace, and on the road to healing. To my survivor tribe, I am so proud of you.”
BARCC Board President April Evans introduced former Boston City Councilor Tito Jackson, who shared his story of being a survivor, and the beginnings of his activism as an ally in the movement to end sexual violence. Jackson also shared a stirring quote from Rabbi Tarfon, “Do not be daunted by the enormity of the world’s grief. Do justly now, love mercifully now, walk humbly now. You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to abandon it.”
Finally, Jackson led the crowd in a warm-up dance to the Cupid Shuffle, which was the perfect way to stir up the energy and enthusiasm on a dreary morning.
