April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising public awareness about sexual violence, supporting survivors, and fostering a culture of consent and prevention. At BARCC, we stand in solidarity with survivors, advocating for change and providing critical resources to those affected by sexual violence.

The Importance of SAAM

Sexual violence is a widespread issue that affects individuals of all ages, genders, and backgrounds. According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, one in three women and one in six men experience sexual violence in their lifetime.

These statistics highlight the urgent need for continued education, advocacy, and support. This month serves as a reminder that preventing sexual violence is a collective responsibility. Through awareness, education, and systemic change, we can work to build a safer world where everyone’s boundaries are respected and upheld.

Supporting Survivors: Breaking the Silence

One of the most important aspects of Sexual Assault Awareness Month is uplifting the voices of survivors. Breaking the silence around sexual violence can be incredibly powerful, not only for survivors but for the broader community. When survivors share their stories, it challenges stigma, fosters healing, and encourages others to come forward.

At BARCC, we provide free, confidential support for survivors, including:

No survivor should have to navigate their healing journey alone. If you or someone you know needs support, we are here to help.

Taking Action: How You Can Get Involved

Ending sexual violence requires action at all levels – individual, community, and systemic. Here are some ways you can contribute to the movement this SAAM:

  • Believe and Support Survivors: If someone shares their experience with you, listen with empathy, believe them, and connect them to resources like BARCC.
  • Engage in Advocacy: Advocate for policies that support survivors and promote prevention efforts, such as comprehensive sex education and workplace protections against harassment.
  • Volunteer or Donate: Your time, skills, and financial contributions help sustain critical services for survivors and prevention initiatives.
    • One way you can show up for your community is by supporting the Walk for Change, either as a volunteer, an attendee or by making a donation.

Together, We Can Make a Difference

Sexual Assault Awareness Month is a time to reaffirm our commitment to a world free from sexual violence. By speaking out, supporting survivors, and working towards prevention, we can create meaningful change. Let’s stand together to build a future where everyone feels safe, valued, and empowered.
