Valentine’s Day is here, and while stores overflow with flowers, chocolate hearts and teddy bears, it’s essential to remember that love isn’t just about grand gestures. It’s about mutual respect, communication and most importantly, consent.

In our society, conversations around consent often takes a backseat to the more romanticized aspects of relationships. But this is the perfect opportunity to change that narrative. Consent is the foundation of healthy, safe and fulfilling relationships.

Consent is a clear, freely communicated agreement between all participants. It’s an active process – never assumed, coerced or implied by silence. Consent must be expressed through words or actions that leave no room for misunderstanding or interpretation. It’s about ongoing communication, where everyone involved respects boundaries, checks in with each other, and feels empowered to say no at any time. Importantly, consent must be given without the influence of alcohol, drugs or manipulation.

This Valentine’s Day let’s reject harmful myths about love and relationships. Paying for dinner doesn’t “earn” intimacy. We need to teach the next generation about consent. By fostering open, honest conversations about boundaries and respect, we can build a culture where everyone feels safe.
