More than Fundraising: Q&A with Delta Tau Delta of Northeastern

As we gear up for the Walk for Change on April 28, we’re excited to see almost 80 teams registered and fundraising to support survivors and change the culture to end sexual violence. We talked with one team, Delta Tau Delta of Northeastern, about why they’re eager to take part and how having a team amplifies their impact.

How did your group come to participate in the Walk? What inspired you to get involved?

As college men, we have the platform to make a change on our college campus. In doing so, supporting BARCC and their profound mission are at the forefront of the ways we can make our aspirations a reality. For the past four years, our fraternity has invited BARCC to our campus to deliver their Survivor Speaker Series, and this past year we have furthered our involvement by joining forces as a sponsor for the BARCC annual Walk. We are so inspired by the magnitude of resources, support, and programs BARCC has available to survivors and their diligence and care for every situation. As a partner, we want to continue to spread the word of these resources on our campus and the greater Boston community. —Joseph Liddy

How do you introduce people to the Walk and BARCC?

Every year we invite BARCC survivor speakers to come to our organization. Having speakers there to break the ice and tell their stories helps us to start the conversation about sexual violence within our chapter. The best method we’ve found to introduce people to the walk is through social media. This spreads the word to not only our friends on campus, but to people we know around the world. —Eric Gillett

What are the best parts of having a big Walk team?

The best part about having a big team is the amount of people we can reach. Our members are involved in various other organizations both on and off campus. By showing their support of BARCC, they help spread awareness to all of these people. —Eric Gillett

What would you say to encourage someone to walk for the first time?

Sexual violence plagues people of all walks of life, but it’s compounded for those who lack the support they need to recover and thrive. The Walk does much more than fundraise. It raises visibility for something that is kept in the dark far too often and shows the world the dedicated support network that is BARCC. —Casey Leffers
