Friday Deadline for Healthy Youth Act

Help Pass this Bill to Prevent Sexual Assault Harassment, and Abuse

Update July 31, 2020: While the legislature has recently extended formal sessions past July 31, we still need you to contact your legislators now in support of the Healthy Youth Act!

Typically the Massachusetts legislative session ends on July 31. That means we have just a few days left to urge lawmakers to pass the Healthy Youth Act! This bill is vital to preventing sexual assault, harassment, and abuse. We have the numbers on our side: 92% of likely voters support sex education, the majority of state representatives support the bill, and dozens of organizations have endorsed the Healthy Youth Act. But we still need you to take action to make sure this bill reaches the finish line.

Please e-mail your legislators today and demand that they pass the Healthy Youth Act. This action alert is through Fenway Health, one of our partners in the Healthy Youth Coalition.

An Act Relative to Healthy Youth was first filed in early 2011, almost 10 years ago. Throughout the week, until the deadline this Friday, we are joining our coalition partners  to mobilize supporters like you to flood the MA State House inboxes with reasons why consent-focused, LGBQ/T-inclusive sex ed is so important to young people across the state and why it can’t wait any longer.

The Healthy Youth Act will do the following:

  • Require school districts that offer sex education to provide medically accurate, age-appropriate information.
  • Focus curriculum on building healthy relationships and help youth understand consent and boundaries.
  • Ensure that material is inclusive of lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer or questioning, and/or transgender (LGBQ/T) youth.
  • Allow parents and guardians to opt their children out from attending offered sexual education classes.

Discussion of consent and what constitutes a healthy relationship in age-appropriate ways beginning in elementary or middle school and continuing through high school is a proven and effective method of sexual violence prevention. The only vaccine we have for sexual violence is education. We cannot delay its implementation any longer.

When you’re done e-mailing your legislators, ask your friends, family, and colleagues to take action. Then, share your activism on social media. Shout your support for the Healthy Youth Act from the rooftops. We have no time to waste.

Our mission is to end sexual violence. We empower survivors of sexual violence to heal and provide education and advocacy for social change to prevent sexual violence.
