Learn and Grow with BARCC! Upcoming Public Workshops

Every day, we train a variety of people—students, police, hospital staff, community groups, new volunteers, and countless others—on how to support survivors and prevent sexual violence. And we want to make sure you and others in our many communities have the opportunity to learn and grow with us, too. That’s why we’re holding a yearlong series of public workshops! We hope these two-hour workshops will empower you to join or deepen your involvement in the mission to end sexual violence in your communities.

These workshops are free and open to the public: just RSVP to help us plan for space, materials, and any accommodations you may need. Bring your friends, parents, and significant others to learn more about self-care, consent, bystander intervention, and how to respond when someone tells you they’ve been assaulted.

This is your chance to get an inside look at best practices in the field of ending sexual violence—not to mention connect with others, nourish yourself, and more! Workshop topics, dates, and descriptions are below. Workshops take place Monday evenings at the Family Justice Center, 989 Commonwealth Ave., Boston MA 02215.

Tools to Take Action: Bystander Intervention Training

February 5, 2018, 6:30–8:30 p.m.
October 1, 2018, 6:30–8:30 p.m.

This workshop is open to anyone who wants to learn concrete tools to support survivors. BARCC’s Bystander Intervention training will prepare you to notice when something is not right, assess the situation, and take action to disrupt and prevent violence or harassment in our communities. Creating a safer culture starts with you, and we will help you practice techniques to intervene safely.

During this bystander training, you will have the opportunity to do the following:

  • Build skills for safely acting to challenge inappropriate sexual and violent behaviors
  • Practice intervening in a variety of scenarios pulled from news of recent events so that you feel prepared for what you may encounter
  • Learn more about BARCC services and ways you can get involved

Sustaining Yourself in the Age of #MeToo: A Self-Care Workshop

April 2, 2018, 6:30–8:30 p.m.

It’s hard to pick up the paper or sign on to social media without facing a barrage of news stories related to sexual violence. While it’s great that #MeToo has pushed the national dialogue about sexual violence to the forefront, it can also be overwhelming. In the midst of all this, you—survivors, significant others, and advocates—may be finding it challenging to take care of yourself.

So let’s take a minute (or a couple hours) to nourish ourselves! This self-care workshop is an opportunity to meet other survivors community members involved in the movement to end sexual violence and support survivors—while also learning skills to be your best self. In addition, a few members of our Survivors Speakers Bureau will join us to share their stories and thoughts about self-care.

What Do I Say? Ways to Support Survivors

June 18, 2018, 6:30–8:30 p.m.

Have you ever had a friend or family member tell you that they’ve experienced sexual violence and not known what to say? Join us at this free workshop to learn an effective model for responding when someone in your life shares with you that they’re a survivor.

In this training, you’ll learn the importance of a supportive response to reduce trauma, how you can offer that response, and ways to support survivors in seeking further care and resources.

Consent: Promoting Healthy Relationships

August 6, 2018, 6:30–8:30 p.m.

With increased public dialogue about #MeToo, discussions of consent abound: What is it? How do you know when you have it? What’s “informed consent”? Join this workshop for a dynamic conversation on consent and how to promote healthy relationships.

  • Develop a fuller understanding of sexual consent within a relationship
  • Learn and discuss factors that might influence someone’s ability to make an informed and healthy decision to engage in sexual activity
  • Explore and discuss a variety of scenarios involving consent
  • Find out how to know that you’re giving and receiving consent

Sustaining Yourself through the Holidays: A Self-Care Workshop

December 3, 2018, 6:30–8:30 p.m.

The holidays can be a challenging time of year for anyone, and sometimes especially for survivors of sexual violence. Busyness, travel, interrupted routines, being around family (or not), being separated from regular support systems; it can all add up. In the midst of all this, you—survivors, significant others, and advocates—may find it challenging to take care of yourself.

So let’s take a minute (or a couple hours) to nourish ourselves! This self-care workshop is an opportunity to meet other survivors and community members involved in the movement to end sexual violence and support survivors—while also learning skills to be your best self. A few members of our Survivors Speakers Bureau will join us to share their stories and thoughts about self-care.  We’ll also practice some self-care through a crafting activity!

Our mission is to end sexual violence. We empower survivors of sexual violence to heal and provide education and advocacy for social change to prevent sexual violence.
